Disney Movie Rewards: A Primer

For those who don't know, Disney Movie Rewards is a loyalty program for purchasing Disney movies and music. Every Disney movie that is released now comes with an insert that has a code. These codes are worth points. Usually a Bluray combo pack is worth 150-200 points and DVDs are around 75-100 (depending on title). I haven't attempted to get points through cds because I usually pick those up second hand, and they don't always have the inserts. You can also earn points for actually seeing a movie in theaters. You have to scan in your tickets, and you'll earn 50-200 points depending on the amount of tickets you have. (Maximum is currently 4 tickets).

No free points from this disk :P
This is what you are looking for. Points would be located under the paper scrap :)

The best part about all of this is that it's free! Your points don't expire, there's no membership fee. If you are already building a collection, you can collect these points as you go. They also offer tons of free points in smaller increments. For Easter, we got to answer trivia questions for a total of 30 points. There's usually a 5 point clicker in the monthly email, and on their facebook page there's a trivia challenge to earn points.

What do you do with these points you might ask? Well, there are prizes! You can "buy" dvds, combo packs, toys, collectibles, even special trips! (Warning, the larger point prizes like trips could require verification that you actually own the movies you say you do. Likely will involve sending in UPCs, but I haven't tried this yet). You can also use the points for entries into sweepstakes, though you always get one free entry if you don't want to spend the points on it.

This is one of two sweepstakes running at the time of this post :)
Sometimes the movies will have special offers inside, for example, Frozen had an offer for a pull apart Olaf plush for $9.95 including shipping. Other movies have had offers for a free charm (usually Disney Princess movies, Cinderella had three that you could pick up) or a free movie ticket to see an upcoming feature. If it's a physical item you generally have to pay shipping, but it's not that expensive and cheaper than if you had to buy the item itself.

For those that get maybe one Disney movie a year, or even less than that, it's still worth getting an account. There are plenty of 0-point prizes, like coloring sheets and activities. Plus with all the ways to get free points, you'll be able to get a physical item within a short time.

These are actually part of a free poster set!
Just one of many free activity sheets available.

There are also special promotions throughout the year, like double points offers (so it might be worth saving up some of the titles that don't give you bonuses right away). Recently there was a buy three Disney movies, get one free through the program. I had some un-entered movies saved up to use for it and picked up Secretariat for free! Plus I got to keep all the points.

If you choose to go for picking up movies through DMR, you have two options for some of them (usually combo packs).

  • Pay a higher amount in points and get the item completely free.
OR
  • Give up less of your points and pay shipping and handling.

Both work equally well depending on what you want to do. Also, you'll get some of your points refunded because the free movie comes with it's insert. Win Win!

You aren't limited to just classic Disney movies for kids, though there is a lot of that. :) They also have movies and shows from their other properties. They have seasons of Lost, Ugly Betty, and Scrubs, as well as movies like Tempest, Phenomenon, Hidalgo and Arachnaphobia. There's really something for everyone
